Lalibela

Lalibela is Ethiopia's most celebrated destination and one of Africa's greatest wonders. The town's 11 churches, carved directly from solid volcanic rock during the reign of King Lalibela in the 12th century, represent an extraordinary feat of human achievement. Often described as the 'eighth wonder of the world', they remain active places of worship where white-robed pilgrims gather year-round. The churches are divided into two main groups connected by tunnels and trenches. At Timkat — Ethiopia's Epiphany celebration — Lalibela transforms into one of the most spectacular religious festivals on the continent.
