The Seychelles archipelago, situated about 1,500 km east of mainland Africa, is composed of 115 islands divided between the granitic Inner Islands — including Mahé, Praslin, and La Digue — and the flat coralline Outer Islands. The granitic islands are among the oldest oceanic islands on earth, and their dramatic boulders, white sand beaches, and turquoise lagoons create a scenery of extraordinary beauty. Praslin is home to the Valle de Mai — a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing the endemic coco de mer palm, the largest seed in the plant kingdom. La Digue's Anse Source d'Argent, framed by giant pink granite boulders, is frequently cited as the most photographed beach in the world. The Seychelles is also one of the last habitats of the giant Aldabra tortoise, and its surrounding seas are a sanctuary for whale sharks, manta rays, and pristine coral gardens.
