La Digue Island

La Digue, with just 2,700 inhabitants, preserves a wonderfully unhurried pace of life — most visitors rent a bicycle and spend their days cycling between jaw-dropping beaches, with Anse Source d'Argent's iconic pink granite boulders and translucent lagoon being the undisputed highlight. The island's interior rises steeply to l'Union Estate, a working coconut and vanilla plantation with a traditional copra mill, where giant Aldabra tortoises roam freely. Grand Anse and Petit Anse on the wild south coast are spectacular for scenery if often too rough for swimming. The last remaining breeding colony of the critically endangered Black Paradise Flycatcher — unique to La Digue — adds a compelling ornithological dimension to this perfect island escape.
