Mount Kilimanjaro
At 5,895 metres, Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain and the world's tallest free-standing volcano. Unlike most high mountains, Kilimanjaro can be summited without technical climbing skills, though it demands physical fitness and proper acclimatisation. Seven official routes offer different experiences: Machame and Lemosho are the most scenic; Marangu is known as the 'Coca-Cola route' with hut accommodation. The mountain passes through five distinct climate zones from tropical forest to arctic summit. Success rates vary from around 50% on the standard 5-day route to over 85% on 8-day routes allowing proper acclimatisation. The summit view — and the sense of achievement — make Kilimanjaro one of Africa's most rewarding adventures.
