Harar

Harar Jugol is a walled city in eastern Ethiopia and one of the most important cities in Islamic history, containing 82 mosques and over 100 shrines. The old city's maze of narrow alleyways, colourful traditional houses, and vibrant markets create an atmosphere unlike any other in Africa. Harar is also famous for the 'hyena men' — locals who hand-feed wild hyenas outside the city walls each night, a tradition dating back over 500 years. The city is a centre of coffee culture and traditional Harari crafts.
