Black River Gorges

Black River Gorges National Park covers 6,574 hectares of the island's southwestern highlands and represents the last significant area of native forest in Mauritius. The park is a UNESCO tentative World Heritage Site and a refuge for endemic species including the Mauritius kestrel, Pink pigeon and Echo parakeet — all brought back from the brink of extinction. Multiple hiking trails wind through the park, from easy walks to challenging full-day treks with spectacular views over the coast. The area is also home to the dramatic Chamarel Coloured Earth — seven shades of volcanic soil that never mix — and Chamarel Waterfall.
